A booth has only a few seconds to make a stranger stop. Virtual Captains had to make the most of those seconds at Expand North Star in Dubai.

The event took place at Dubai Harbour. It was hosted by Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy and described as the world’s largest gathering for startups and investors.

Walk through a hall like this and you see hundreds of stands. Most people look, then keep walking. The ones who stop are the ones who understand right away what the company does. A clear answer to “what do you do?” is often all it takes to start a real conversation. Explaining your business to a stranger is a sales skill, and it is the skill Virtual Captains works on.

Many founders at startup events have a good product. What they often lack is a plan to sell it. They can describe the technology, but find it harder to explain why a customer should buy, or what to ask for at the end of the chat. That is where Virtual Captains helps. It works with businesses on sales strategy, team training, and hiring remote sales staff.

Startup and investor events are full of first meetings. A founder talks to an investor. A company talks to a possible partner. Someone talks to a possible first customer. Each of these goes better when the person can explain their business in simple words and answer questions without hesitation.

In a hall full of technology, Virtual Captains was there to talk about how to sell it.

Dubai is a good place to test this. People from many countries come to the same hall, and a founder soon finds out whether their pitch makes sense to a stranger. Practising it before the event makes a big difference.

Virtual Captains was glad to take part, and to meet the founders and business owners who stopped by.
